About Grand Staircase and Tiepolo Fresco

The great staircase of the Würzburg Residence, a hall without pillars under a single vault by Balthasar Neumann, painted by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo in 1752 and 1753 with Apollo and the four continents.

Neumann built the staircase from 1737 and closed its vault in 1743: about 18 by 32 metres, with no column to support it. Tiepolo and his sons covered it with a fresco of about 580 square metres, often called one of the largest ceiling frescoes in the world. It shows the four continents then known to Europe paying homage to the prince-bishop.

The staircase is part of the visit to the Residence and needs the palace ticket. Climb slowly, because the painting opens up as you go.

Did you know? The vault over the great staircase of the Würzburg Residence, about 18 by 32 metres, has no pillars, and it held when the roof burned in 1945.
