About Zentralfriedhof (Vienna Central Cemetery)
One of Europe's largest cemeteries, opened in 1874 in Simmering, famous for its graves of honour holding Beethoven, Schubert and other great composers, and its domed Art Nouveau church.
Vienna's Zentralfriedhof, or Central Cemetery, opened on All Saints' Day in 1874 in the Simmering district. Covering roughly 2.5 square kilometres, with around 330,000 graves and well over three million interments, it is one of Europe's largest cemeteries, the largest by number of people buried, though Hamburg's Ohlsdorf cemetery is bigger by area.
Its best-known draw is the section of Ehrengräber, or graves of honour, where composers including Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms and Johann Strauss the younger lie together; Beethoven and Schubert were reburied here in 1888. Mozart is commemorated only by a cenotaph, as his actual grave at the St Marx cemetery was lost. The cemetery's central axis is crowned by the Art Nouveau Karl Borromäus church, popularly the Dr Karl Lueger Memorial Church, designed by Max Hegele and built between 1908 and 1911.
