About Stadtpark

Vienna's first municipal park, opened in 1862 along the Ringstrasse, best known for its gilded Johann Strauss monument and a garden crowded with memorials to the city's composers.

The Stadtpark opened in 1862 along Vienna's new Ringstrasse, on land freed by the demolition of the old city walls, and is generally regarded as the first public park laid out by the municipality itself. Designed in the English landscape style, attributed to the painter Josef Selleny and executed by the city gardener Rudolph Siebeck, it is threaded by the River Wien and its ornamental bridges.

Its best-known feature is the gilded monument to Johann Strauss II, a gold-plated bronze figure of the composer with his violin set within a white marble arch of dancing figures, sculpted by Edmund Hellmer and unveiled in 1921. Often called Vienna's most photographed monument, it stands amid one of the city's densest collections of memorials to composers and artists, near the Kursalon concert hall.
