About The Belvedere (Schloss Belvedere)
Prince Eugene of Savoy's twin Baroque summer palaces, set above a tiered formal garden, now an art museum holding the world's largest Klimt collection, including the golden “The Kiss.”
The Belvedere is a Baroque ensemble of two palaces, the Upper and Lower Belvedere, linked by a tiered French formal garden and built as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, a celebrated general in Habsburg service. The architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt completed the Lower Belvedere first, around 1716, and the grander Upper Belvedere by 1723.
After Prince Eugene's death, Empress Maria Theresa acquired the estate, and in 1781 the imperial picture gallery opened to the public here, making it one of the world's earliest public museums. Today it is the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere, holding some eight centuries of Austrian art and the world's largest collection of Gustav Klimt works, among them the celebrated “The Kiss.” The Marble Hall of the Upper Belvedere hosted the signing of the 1955 Austrian State Treaty, which restored the country's sovereignty.
