About Schönbrunn Palace (Schloss Schönbrunn)
The Habsburgs' vast Baroque summer residence, remodelled for Empress Maria Theresa, with over 1,400 rooms, a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble where a six-year-old Mozart once played for the court.
Schönbrunn Palace was the principal summer residence of the Habsburg rulers, set in the west of Vienna amid a vast formal park. The building holds some 1,441 rooms, of which fewer than fifty are open to visitors. Its Baroque and Rococo appearance is largely the work of court architect Nikolaus Pacassi, who remodelled an earlier, more modest structure for Empress Maria Theresa from the 1740s; UNESCO credits both Pacassi and Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, whose grander original scheme was never built as drawn.
The palace was Maria Theresa's favourite residence and the centre of Habsburg court life. In 1762 a six-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart performed for her here, and in June 1961 its halls hosted the gala dinner of the Kennedy–Khrushchev summit, though the talks themselves were held at the powers' Vienna embassies. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
