About Schönbrunn Zoo (Tiergarten Schönbrunn)
Founded in 1752 as an imperial menagerie in the palace park, Tiergarten Schönbrunn is the oldest zoo in the world still operating, famous today for breeding giant pandas.
Tiergarten Schönbrunn was founded in 1752 by Emperor Franz I Stephan, husband of Maria Theresa, as an imperial menagerie in the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace. The architect Jean Nicolas Jadot laid out the enclosures in a radial pattern around a central Baroque pavilion, the former imperial breakfast house of 1759, which still stands. Continuously open ever since, it is regarded as the oldest zoo in the world still in operation; the wider public was admitted free from 1779.
The zoo covers around seventeen hectares and keeps hundreds of species, many of them endangered, and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Schönbrunn. It is internationally known for breeding giant pandas, held on loan from China; the cub Fu Long, born in 2007, was a rare European success by natural mating rather than artificial means.
