About The Kahlenberg
A 484-metre hill in the Vienna Woods offering a sweeping panorama over the city and Danube, and the height from which the 1683 relief army broke the Ottoman siege of Vienna.
The Kahlenberg is a hill of about 484 metres on the edge of the Vienna Woods, in the city's 19th district. Its terrace is one of Vienna's classic viewpoints, looking out over the whole city and the Danube. On 12 September 1683 it served as the staging ground of the Battle of Vienna, when a Christian relief army of some seventy thousand men under the Polish king John III Sobieski descended the wooded heights and broke the Ottoman siege led by Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa, in a climactic charge of Polish winged hussars.
Confusingly, the neighbouring hill now called Leopoldsberg once bore the name Kahlenberg, so older accounts can differ. The small church of St Joseph on the summit, grown from a former Camaldolese hermitage, is linked to Sobieski and revered as the “Polish church” of Vienna. An observation tower and a broadcast transmitter now share the ridge.
