About Schönbrunn Gardens & the Gloriette
Schönbrunn's grand French formal park, opened to the public in 1779, crowned by the hilltop Gloriette of 1775, which frames the classic view back over the palace and Vienna.
The gardens of Schönbrunn are a French formal Baroque park laid out largely under Empress Maria Theresa, where clipped hedges, gravel avenues and fountains are set on a strict axis rising from the palace to the hill behind. Emperor Joseph II opened them to the public around 1779. Crowning the hill is the Gloriette, an arcaded structure built in 1775 to a design by Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg as a monument to Habsburg power; it now holds a café and a rooftop terrace with the famous view back over the palace.
Scattered through the park are the Neptune Fountain, completed around 1781, the artificial Roman Ruin of 1778, an obelisk fountain, and the great iron-and-glass Palm House, among the largest glasshouses in Europe. The much-loved hedge maze is a modern reconstruction of a Baroque original that had long since been removed. The whole ensemble is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Did you know? The Gloriette, built in 1775 on the hill above the palace, was raised as a monument to Habsburg glory. Today its arches shelter a café, and its roof gives the classic view over Schönbrunn.
