About Austrian Parliament Building
Theophil Hansen's Greek-Revival parliament rose in 1883 for the empire's Reichsrat, not a republic. Athena guards the fountain out front; the building reopened, renovated, in 2023.
The Austrian Parliament Building rose between 1874 and 1883 on the Ringstrasse, designed by Theophil Hansen in a Greek-Revival style that consciously evoked the democracy of ancient Athens; Hansen regarded it as his life's work. It was built not for a republic but as the Reichsratsgebäude, home of the Reichsrat that legislated for the Austrian half of the Habsburg monarchy, and became the parliament of the Austrian Republic only after 1918.
The Pallas Athene Fountain in front, also designed by Hansen and built between 1893 and 1902, is crowned by Carl Kundmann's figure of Athena, goddess of wisdom. Bronze horse-tamers and chariots stand along the roofline, and statues of Greek and Roman historians line the ramp. After a full renovation running from about 2018 to 2022, the barrier-free building reopened for parliamentary business and visitors in January 2023.
Did you know? Though it resembles a temple of democracy, the building was raised in the 1880s as the Reichsrat of the empire's Austrian lands, becoming a republic's parliament only after the monarchy fell in 1918.
