About MuseumsQuartier
A vast arts district inside the emperor's old Baroque stables, mixing the Leopold Museum's Schiele hoard, the basalt mumok and courtyards full of colourful, movable Enzi loungers.
The MuseumsQuartier opened in 2001 inside the former imperial court stables, whose long Baroque facade was begun in the 1720s to designs by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and completed by his son. Behind that historic front stand sleek modern museum blocks. Spread across roughly 90,000 square metres, it is one of the largest cultural quarters in the world, and it is not a single museum but a cluster of independent institutions and courtyards.
The Leopold Museum holds the world's largest collection of Egon Schiele, alongside major works by Gustav Klimt and other Viennese Modernists. The basalt-clad mumok shows modern and contemporary art, and smaller halls, an architecture centre and creative studios fill the rest. In the main courtyard, movable loungers called Enzis, repainted in changing seasonal colours, invite visitors to linger.
