The Karlskirche is a Baroque votive church on Karlsplatz, dedicated to Saint Charles Borromeo, a patron invoked against the plague and the name-saint of Emperor Charles VI. It was built after the emperor's 1713 vow, made during Vienna's last great plague epidemic, with construction running from 1716 to 1737.
Designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and completed by his son Joseph Emanuel, the church fuses motifs from famous buildings, from the Pantheon to Saint Peter's. Two free-standing spiral columns, their reliefs modelled on Rome's Trajan's Column, flank the portico and depict the life of Saint Charles Borromeo. Inside, the great dome carries frescoes by Johann Michael Rottmayr, now reachable by a visitor lift. In the reflecting pool outside sits Henry Moore's sculpture “Hill Arches.” It ranks among the grandest Baroque churches north of the Alps, though Saint Stephen's Cathedral remains Vienna's largest church.
