The Naschmarkt is Vienna's largest and best-known inner-city market, a lively ribbon of about 120 stalls, food shops and restaurants running some 1.5 kilometres along the Wienzeile, above the covered course of the River Wien. A market has stood on the site since the sixteenth century and settled into its present location beside the former Freihaus in 1780.
Despite the popular link to the German word “naschen,” meaning to snack, the name most likely descends from “Aschenmarkt,” after the ash-wood pails once used to sell milk; it shifted to “Naschmarkt” around 1820. Today the stalls span Austrian and international foods, from cheese and pastries to Middle Eastern spices and mezze. On Saturdays, a large flea market has spread across the market's western end since 1977, adding antiques, curios and bric-a-brac to the city's most famous market street.
Did you know? Despite the tasty folk tale linking it to “naschen” (to nibble), the market was long called the “Aschenmarkt,” most likely after the ash-wood milk pails once sold there; it became “Naschmarkt” only around 1820.
