About Albertina
A Habsburg palace on the old city wall, home to one of the world's greatest graphic collections. Its famous Dürer originals are so fragile that visitors usually see facsimiles.
The Albertina occupies the Palais Erzherzog Albrecht, the largest surviving Habsburg residential palace in Vienna, perched on a bastion of the old city wall at the southern tip of the Hofburg. A projecting titanium canopy by Hans Hollein, added in 2003, marks the entrance, where an equestrian statue of Archduke Albrecht stands guard. The collection was founded in 1776 by Duke Albert Casimir of Saxe-Teschen, who gave it his name, and became a state museum after 1919.
It holds one of the world's largest graphic collections, roughly a million prints and some 65,000 drawings, including Albrecht Dürer's celebrated “Young Hare” and “Praying Hands”. Because these works are so light-sensitive, the originals are rarely displayed and visitors usually see facsimiles. The permanent Batliner Collection adds modern painting, running from Monet to Picasso, a bright counterweight to the hushed drawing rooms.
