About Imperial Apartments & Sisi Museum
Nineteen gilded imperial rooms and a museum of Empress Sisi’s parasols, gowns and gymnastics, the restless real woman behind the sugary film legend, down to the assassin’s file.
The Kaiserappartements are the nineteen official and private rooms once used by Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth, furnished in the gilded Neo-Rococo style of the later 19th century. They range from ceremonial audience chambers to Franz Joseph’s spartan study, where he worked at a plain desk beside a simple iron bed. Photography is banned throughout, which keeps the rooms hushed.
Opened in 2004, the adjoining Sisi Museum displays around three hundred of Elisabeth’s personal objects, parasols, gloves, reconstructed gowns, her gymnastic equipment and a replica of the file used to kill her in 1898. It sets the real, restless, image-obsessed empress against the sugary ‘Sissi’ of 1950s cinema. The route also passes the Silberkammer, whose thousands of pieces of court silver, porcelain and gold display the machinery of imperial dining.
Did you know? She never was ‘Sissi.’ The double-s spelling comes from three romantic 1950s films; the empress herself signed ‘Sisi,’ and the sweet screen princess bears little resemblance to the moody, driven real woman.
