About Mozarthaus Vienna (Figarohaus)
The only one of Mozart's dozen Vienna apartments still standing. In these rooms behind the cathedral, at the height of his success, he composed The Marriage of Figaro here.
Mozarthaus Vienna occupies Domgasse 5, a short walk behind St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Dom that gives the lane its name. Of the roughly dozen apartments Mozart rented during his years in Vienna, this is the only one that survives. He lived here from September 1784 to April 1787, and it was his largest and most expensive Viennese home, with four rooms, two cabinets and a kitchen on the first floor. Far from the myth of a starving composer, these were the rooms of his most prosperous and successful period.
Here Mozart composed The Marriage of Figaro, which premiered in 1786 and gave the building its popular nickname, the Figarohaus, along with three of the string quartets he dedicated to Joseph Haydn. The seventeenth-century building was converted into the present multi-floor museum in 2006, with exhibition space on the floors above the apartment itself.
