About Kohlmarkt
A short, glittering pedestrian street of luxury shops running from the Graben toward the Hofburg's green copper dome, still home to the storied Demel confectioner at number fourteen.
The Kohlmarkt is a short pedestrian street in Vienna's Innere Stadt, running roughly three hundred metres from the Graben to Michaelerplatz, where it ends on the curved facade and copper dome of the Hofburg's Michaelertrakt, completed in 1893. Its medieval name means coal or charcoal market, a memory of the fuel once sold along what is one of the city's oldest streets. Today it is Vienna's leading luxury-retail address, forming part of the pedestrian circuit known as the Goldenes U with the Graben and Kärntner Strasse.
At number fourteen stands Demel, a former Imperial and Royal Court Confectioner. Though the business traces its lineage to 1786, it took the Demel name in 1857 and moved to the Kohlmarkt only in 1888. Its long rivalry with the Hotel Sacher over the Original Sacher-Torte left Demel selling its own version as the Eduard-Sacher-Torte.
Did you know? Demel is often billed as Vienna's oldest pastry shop, open since 1786. True only in spirit: it took the Demel name in 1857 and reached its Kohlmarkt address in 1888.
