About St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom)
Vienna's Gothic cathedral, whose slender south spire the locals fondly call the Steffl. Its great Pummerin bell hangs not there but in the shorter, unfinished north tower across the roof.
St. Stephen's Cathedral is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Vienna and the enduring symbol of the city. Duke Rudolf IV laid the foundation of the present Gothic building in 1359, though a Romanesque predecessor consecrated in 1147 survives in the west facade and the Giant's Door. The south tower, affectionately known as the Steffl, was built between 1368 and 1433 and rises about 136 metres. Its steep roof, relaid with roughly 230,000 glazed tiles, carries the Habsburg double-headed eagle on one flank and the arms of Vienna and the republic on the other.
The cathedral's great bell, the Pummerin, hangs in the shorter north tower, where it was installed in 1957. Its predecessor shattered in the fire of April 1945, which spread from looted shops nearby rather than from Allied bombs. Beneath the church lie catacombs holding Habsburg remains and the stacked bones of plague dead.
Did you know? The great bell called the Pummerin hangs in the cathedral's shorter north tower, not the soaring south spire. The original was cast in 1711, by tradition from the bronze of captured Ottoman cannons.
