About Café Central
A grand vaulted coffee house in the Palais Ferstel, opened in 1876 and reopened in 1975, once the haunt of Vienna's writers, wits, and the young Trotsky.
Café Central occupies the ground floor of the Palais Ferstel, a historicist palace on the Herrengasse designed by the architect Heinrich von Ferstel. The café opened in 1876 and, with its high vaulted hall, became one of the leading gathering places of Viennese intellectual and literary life around 1900. Its regulars included the writers Peter Altenberg, Karl Kraus, Hermann Bahr, Alfred Polgar, and Arthur Schnitzler, and the architect Adolf Loos. A life-size figure of Altenberg, traditionally described as papier-mâché, still sits near the entrance.
The café's continuity is not unbroken: it declined and closed around the Second World War, and was re-established only in 1975, after the Palais Ferstel was restored. It is also wrapped in coffee-house legend, notably the tale of the young Leon Trotsky, a genuine pre-war patron, as a Café Central revolutionary.
Did you know? A life-size figure of the poet Peter Altenberg, said to be papier-mâché, sits by the door. He treated the café as home and office, and reputedly used it as his postal address.
