About Imperial Treasury
The Habsburg treasury, where a millennium-old imperial crown shares rooms with a ‘unicorn horn’ that is really a narwhal tusk and a ‘Holy Grail’ that is carved agate.
The Imperial Treasury occupies ground-floor rooms of the Schweizerhof, the oldest part of the Hofburg, and is split into a Secular and an Ecclesiastical collection under the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Its centrepiece is the Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire, an octagon of eight hinged gold plates dated variously to the 10th or 11th century, its arch added later. Kept for centuries in Nuremberg, it was moved to Vienna in 1800 to escape Napoleon.
The galleries mix genuine marvels with cherished misidentifications. The ‘unicorn horn’ is really a narwhal tusk; the ‘Holy Grail’ is a single-block agate bowl from Late Antiquity; and the ‘Holy Lance’ was forged around the 8th century, far too late to be Christ’s. Other stars include a roughly 2,680-carat Colombian emerald jar and the 1602 personal crown of Rudolf II, which later became the crown of the Austrian Empire.
