About Spanish Riding School
Lipizzaner stallions perform classical dressage in a white Baroque hall, and the ‘Spanish’ in the name means the horses’ Iberian ancestry, not the country. It is thoroughly, permanently Viennese.
The Spanish Riding School practises classical dressage, or haute école, with Lipizzaner stallions and is often called the oldest riding school of its kind still operating, first documented in 1565. Despite the name, it has always been in Vienna: ‘Spanish’ refers to the Iberian horses Habsburg rulers brought to court in the 16th century, not to Spain. Only stallions perform, and in 2015 the tradition joined UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.
Performances fill the Winter Riding School, a white Baroque hall built between 1729 and 1735 for Emperor Charles VI to designs by Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach; riders still salute his portrait. The Lipizzaner breed mixes Spanish, Arab and Berber bloodlines and traces to a stud founded in 1580 at Lipica, now in Slovenia. Famously born dark, the horses only turn white between about six and ten years of age.
Did you know? The word ‘Spanish’ has nothing to do with Spain. It marks the Iberian horses Habsburgs imported in the 16th century; the school itself has stood in central Vienna throughout its history.
