About The Hofburg
A walled quarter of palaces the Habsburgs enlarged for six centuries, its Baroque-looking dome a 19th-century afterthought, now the winter seat where Austria’s president still keeps an office.
For more than six hundred years the Hofburg served as the winter residence and seat of the Habsburgs, from medieval dukes to Holy Roman Emperors to the emperors of Austria. It is less a single palace than a walled quarter that grew wing by wing between the 13th and early 20th centuries, layering Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Historicist architecture around a chain of courtyards.
The oldest surviving core is the Swiss Wing, entered through the Renaissance Schweizertor of 1552. The famous domed Michaelertrakt on Michaelerplatz looks Baroque but was built only in the 1890s to an old Fischer von Erlach design. Heldenplatz and the curved Neue Burg belong to an imperial forum left unfinished when the monarchy fell in 1918. Since 1946 the complex has housed the offices of Austria’s president.
Did you know? The grand Baroque dome over Michaelerplatz is a fake antique. Its architect drew it around 1726, but builders only raised it in the 1890s, more than 150 years after his death.
