About St. Peter's Church (Peterskirche)
A green-domed Baroque church tucked just off the Graben. A gilded relief credits Charlemagne with founding a church here in 792, though that origin is only a cherished legend.
St. Peter's Church stands on Petersplatz, a few steps from the Graben. The present Baroque church was begun around 1701 and consecrated in 1733. Gabriele Montani started the design, and Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt, a leading figure of Austrian Baroque, took over and is credited with its green copper dome. The church was loosely modelled on St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and is often called one of the first domed Baroque churches in Vienna.
The interior is built on an oval plan, richly worked in gilt and marble. The dome fresco of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary was painted by Johann Michael Rottmayr around 1715. A gilded relief recalls a legend that Charlemagne founded a church here in 792, but there is no firm evidence for it, and claims that this is Vienna's oldest church remain contested, as tiny St. Ruprecht's makes the same boast.
Did you know? A gilded relief on the church credits Charlemagne with founding a sanctuary on this spot in 792. There is no firm evidence for the story, and historians treat the imperial founding as a legend.
