About Kunsthistorisches Museum
The imperial art museum opened in 1891, twin to the natural-history museum opposite. It holds the world's largest Bruegel collection and Cellini's famous gold salt cellar.
The Kunsthistorisches Museum opened in 1891 under Emperor Franz Joseph I, twenty years in the building to plans by Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer. Renaissance-Revival in style, it is the architectural twin of the Naturhistorisches Museum facing it across Maria-Theresien-Platz, the pair conceived to hold the imperial collections of art and of nature. Inside hang the former Habsburg picture galleries.
The collection is anchored by the world's largest holding of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, twelve panels including Hunters in the Snow and The Peasant Wedding, alongside Vermeer's The Art of Painting, Raphael's Madonna of the Meadow and major Titians, Rubens and Caravaggios. In the Kunstkammer sits Benvenuto Cellini's gold Saliera, made in the 1540s for Francis I of France and the only fully authenticated gold sculpture by the master, stolen in 2003 and recovered undamaged in 2006.
