Maria-Theresien-Platz is a grand ceremonial square laid out as half of the never-completed imperial Kaiserforum. It is flanked by two near-identical museum palaces designed by Gottfried Semper and Carl von Hasenauer: the Kunsthistorisches Museum, which opened in 1891, and the Naturhistorisches Museum, which opened in 1889. The square itself is the open plaza and its central monument, not a museum; the two galleries are grand attractions in their own right.
At its heart stands the largest monument to Empress Maria Theresa anywhere, sculpted by Kaspar von Zumbusch and unveiled in 1888. The enthroned empress holds the Pragmatic Sanction, the 1713 decree that allowed her to inherit the Habsburg lands. Around the pedestal ride her generals and stand her advisers and contemporaries, among them Haydn, Mozart and the young Gluck. It ranks among the most monumental memorials of the Ringstrasse era.
