About St. Matthias' Abbey (Benediktinerabtei St. Matthias)
A working Benedictine abbey in southern Trier that claims the tomb of the Apostle Matthias, said to be the only apostle's grave north of the Alps.
The Benediktinerabtei St. Matthias is a Benedictine abbey in the south of Trier, belonging to the Congregation of the Annunciation of the Benedictine Confederation. Originally dedicated to St. Eucharius, traditionally the first Bishop of Trier, the community adopted the Rule of St. Benedict around 977. Relics identified as those of the Apostle Matthias were reportedly discovered in 1127 during building work, and the Romanesque basilica was consecrated on 13 January 1148. The church stands above an early-Christian burial ground linked to the early bishops of Trier.
The abbey was secularised in 1802 and re-founded as an active Benedictine community on 22 October 1922, numbering about nineteen monks as of 2007. It remains a place of pilgrimage, centred on the shrine venerated as the tomb of Matthias. The abbey claims this as the only apostle's grave in Germany and north of the Alps, a traditional claim of veneration rather than a historically verified fact.
