About Hauptmarkt (Main Market Square)

Trier's central market square, gathered around a market cross from 958, the sixteenth-century Petrusbrunnen and the Rotes Haus, whose inscription repeats the legend that Trier predates Rome.

The Hauptmarkt is Trier's central market square and one of the largest in the city, lined with historic burgher houses of many periods. At its heart stands the Marktkreuz, a market cross set up by Archbishop Heinrich I in 958 to mark the town's market rights, mounted on a reused Roman granite column and topped by the Lamb of God. The original cross has been kept in the Städtisches Museum Simeonstift since 1964, and a replica has stood on the square since 1979. Nearby, the Petrusbrunnen fountain was carved in 1594/95 by Hans Ruprecht Hoffmann.

Around the square, the Steipe, a civic banqueting house from about 1430, was destroyed in the Second World War and later reconstructed, while a Baroque gateway leads to the parish church of St. Gangolf. The Baroque Rotes Haus carries an inscription proclaiming the legend that Trier stood 1,300 years before Rome, founded by the mythical Trebeta, a civic legend rather than documented history.

Did you know? The market cross has watched over the square since 958, when Archbishop Heinrich I raised it to mark Trier's market rights. Its Latin inscription simply reads that Archbishop Henry erected it.
