About Karl Marx House (Karl-Marx-Haus)

The 1727 Baroque townhouse where Karl Marx was born on 5 May 1818, now a museum on his life and work; his family left the following year.

The Karl-Marx-Haus is a Baroque townhouse at Brückenstraße 10 in Trier, built in 1727. Karl Marx was born in the house on 5 May 1818, but the family moved out around October 1819 to a smaller house near the Porta Nigra, so it is precisely his birthplace rather than his childhood home, though it is often loosely called the latter. The building opened as a museum on 5 May 1947 and is operated by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, with a major renovation and expansion completed on 14 March 1983, the hundredth anniversary of Marx's death.

The museum presents Marx's life and work as a philosopher, journalist, sociologist and economist, along with the impact of his ideas, and receives roughly 50,000 visitors a year, about a third of them Chinese tourists. A separate bronze statue of Marx by the Chinese sculptor Wu Weishan, a gift from the People's Republic of China, was unveiled on 5 May 2018 and stands on the nearby Simeonstiftplatz, not at the house.

Did you know? Marx was born here on 5 May 1818, but the family moved out the following year, around October 1819. So the house is strictly his birthplace, not the childhood home it is often called.
