About Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier

Trier's major archaeology museum, holding Roman mosaics, the Neumagen wine ship, and the Trier Gold Hoard of about 2,650 gold coins found in 1993, spanning 200,000 years of history.

The Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier is a major archaeology museum, founded in 1877 as the Provincial Museum of the Prussian Rhine Province. Its collections span roughly 200,000 years, from the Stone Age to the Baroque era, and include an extensive collection of Roman mosaics, sculptures and frescoes. Among its highlights is the Neumagen wine ship, a Roman funerary monument. The museum has been active in regional archaeological excavation since its founding, and its permanent exhibition covers about 4,000 square metres.

The museum houses the Trier Gold Hoard, discovered in 1993, comprising about 2,650 Roman gold coins weighing roughly 18.5 kilograms, and often described as the largest Roman gold hoard ever found. Its mosaic collection is characterised as the most extensive north of the Alps. The building lies near the Palace Gardens, close to the Constantine Basilica and the Electoral Palace. Since 2008 it has been run by the Cultural Heritage directorate of Rhineland-Palatinate.
