About Roman Bridge (Römerbrücke)

A working road bridge over the Moselle whose nine stone piers are Roman; widely called the oldest bridge in Germany, it still carries daily traffic on its ancient foundations.

The Römerbrücke is a road bridge across the Moselle whose stone pillars are of Roman origin. The bridge has nine stone piers, dating from the second century AD, built of hard volcanic basalt from the Eifel region. Earlier wooden bridges stood on the same site, going back at least to about 17 BC. The upper structure was renewed twice, in the early twelfth and early eighteenth centuries after war damage, so the arches above the piers are largely post-Roman.

The bridge still carries road traffic over the Moselle today, connecting Trier-West on the west bank with the old town on the east. It is widely described as the oldest bridge in Germany, though this is a repeated claim rather than a precisely settled fact, and the often-cited date of 144 AD comes from secondary sources. A tradition of tossing coins from the bridge for luck is recorded. The Römerbrücke is part of Trier's UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1986.
