About Barbara Baths (Barbarathermen)
Once a vast Roman bath complex, the Barbarathermen were slowly quarried away over the centuries; only foundations and service tunnels survive, now viewed from a raised footbridge.
The Barbarathermen, or Barbara Baths, are the remains of a large Roman public bath complex in the south of Trier, near the Moselle. They were built in the second half of the second century AD to add capacity after the older Forum Baths had become too small. When complete they measured about 172 by 240 metres and covered roughly 42,000 square metres, spanning two Roman city blocks. The baths remained in use through the fourth century and fell out of use during the early fifth century.
From the early fifth century residential buildings were put up on the site, and in the Middle Ages fortifications were built into the ruins. In 1611 the surviving masonry was quarried and reused as building material for a Jesuit college, so today only the foundations and subterranean service tunnels remain. The site is accessible via a raised footbridge with interpretive signage, and it forms part of Trier's UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1986.
Did you know? When complete, the Barbara Baths covered roughly 42,000 square metres across two city blocks. Some sources describe them as the largest Roman bath north of the Alps, though that superlative varies between accounts.
