About Imperial Baths (Kaiserthermen)
A grand late-Roman bath complex that, by most accounts, was never finished as baths; today its towering caldarium wall and walkable underground service tunnels are its most memorable feature.
The Kaiserthermen, or Imperial Baths, are a large late-Roman public bath complex in Trier. Construction began around 300 AD and continued into the reign of Constantine, to about 316 AD. The complex had two parts, the bathing block and a large exercise courtyard, or palaestra, of about 160 by 130 metres. Its plan followed the great imperial baths of Rome, such as those of Caracalla and Trajan, and the hot pools were designed to reach about 40 degrees Celsius.
The baths are commonly said never to have been completed or used as baths, though the reason construction stopped is not established. In the Middle Ages the ruins were incorporated into the city fortifications and used as a castle. The most conspicuous remains are the tall walls of the hot-bath hall, with their arched window openings, and an extensive network of underground service passages survives and can be walked. The Imperial Baths form part of Trier's UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1986.
Did you know? Despite their imperial scale, the Kaiserthermen are widely reported to have never been finished or used as baths. The reason the work stopped has never been established, leaving one of Roman Trier's real mysteries.
