About Trier Cathedral (Dom St. Peter)
Often called Germany's oldest cathedral, this many-layered church joins Roman brick, a Romanesque westwork and the Holy Robe, a relic venerated as the seamless garment of Christ.
Trier Cathedral, the Hohe Domkirche St. Peter, is the seat of the Diocese of Trier and, by long tradition, is often called the oldest cathedral in Germany. Its earliest core was built of Roman brick in the early fourth century, on foundations from the age of Constantine, and darker Roman masonry still survives in its walls. The predominantly Romanesque building carries an eleventh-century westwork with four towers, plus later Gothic vaulting and Baroque interior elements, and its interior measures about 112.5 by 41 metres.
In 1986 it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the adjoining Church of Our Lady and Trier's Roman monuments. Behind the east choir, a chapel holds the Holy Robe, venerated by tradition as the seamless garment of Christ and said to have been brought to Trier by St. Helena. That attribution is a matter of faith rather than established history, and the relic is shown only at rare pilgrimages, most recently in 2012.
Did you know? The cathedral's oldest walls are older than the idea of a cathedral here. Roman brick from the early fourth century still stands in the fabric, laid on foundations dating from the age of Constantine.
