About Porta Nigra

The great dark Roman city gate that still guards the edge of Trier's old town, which spent centuries as a church before being stripped back toward its ancient form.

The Porta Nigra was the northern gate of the Roman town of Augusta Treverorum, built of grey sandstone after about 170 AD. Its Latin name means black gate, a medieval label prompted by the darkened colour of the stone; the original Roman name has not survived. Two four-storey towers once flanked two gate passages around an inner courtyard. The blocks were joined with iron cramps rather than mortar, and the gate appears never to have been fully finished.

From around 1028 a Greek hermit, Simeon, lived in the ruin, and after his death the gate was converted into a double church with a monastery beside it. Napoleon dissolved that church in 1802 and ordered the building returned toward its Roman form, though the work was left incomplete. It is often called the best-preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps, and it forms part of the Roman monuments listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.

Did you know? The name Porta Nigra, meaning black gate, is a medieval nickname prompted by the darkened sandstone; the original Roman name of the gate has not been preserved in any surviving record, so it stays a mystery.
