About Liebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady)
The cathedral's Gothic neighbour, built by French masons in the thirteenth century on a rose-shaped plan, and called by UNESCO the earliest French High Gothic church outside France.
The Liebfrauenkirche, or Church of Our Lady, stands immediately beside Trier Cathedral, sharing a wall and cloister with it. Built in the thirteenth century, roughly between 1227/1230 and 1260, it is a Roman Catholic church of the Diocese of Trier. Archbishop Theoderich von Wied engaged builders from the Champagne region of France, and the result is an early Gothic church whose cruciform plan is shaped like a rose, a symbol of the Virgin Mary. Inside, twelve columns evoke the Twelve Apostles, with eight altar niches.
It is commonly counted among the earliest Gothic churches in Germany, and UNESCO describes it as the earliest church built in the French High Gothic style outside France. It stands on the site of the southern hall of Trier's fourth-century double-church complex, was made a minor basilica in 1951, and had its war-damaged roof replaced in 1945 and again in 2003. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
Did you know? The church hides a symbol in its own footprint: the cruciform plan is laid out in the shape of a rose, an emblem of the Virgin Mary, best appreciated from a bird's-eye view.
