About Trier Amphitheater

A Roman amphitheatre cut into a hillside on the city's eastern edge, doubling as part of the city wall, with an underground cellar that held animals and condemned prisoners.

The Trier Amphitheater is a Roman amphitheatre on the eastern edge of the ancient city, dug into the slope of the Petrisberg hill. It is usually dated to around the second century AD, and the structure measures about 120 by 145 metres. It was built into the city's eastern wall, so it served as part of Trier's defences as well as an entertainment venue. Beneath the arena is a cellar that was used to store animals and to hold condemned prisoners before the shows.

The seating capacity is estimated at about 20,000, and the precise construction date remains uncertain. Archaeological finds include timber remains and about 1,200 coins from the late third century AD onward, and a burial ground of 46 graves was found nearby in 1996. Today the site is open to visitors, including the underground cellar, and hosts Roman-themed events. It is one of the Roman monuments that form Trier's UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1986.

Did you know? The amphitheatre is often said to have seated about 20,000 spectators, but that figure is an estimate rather than a measured count, and its exact date of construction remains uncertain among archaeologists.
