About Place du Capitole

Toulouse's grand civic square, fronted by the Capitole town hall and its long 1760 Cammas facade, and paved with Raymond Moretti's great Occitan cross at its centre.

The Place du Capitole is the main civic square of Toulouse, a rectangle of roughly 126 by 92 metres bordered on all sides by neoclassical facades. Its east side is the Capitole itself, the city hall and seat of municipal government, named after the capitouls, the magistrates who governed medieval Toulouse; the word was coined in 1522 to recall the Roman Capitol. The long brick-and-stone front, about 135 metres wide, was completed in 1760 to designs by Guillaume Cammas, its eight central columns recalling the eight capitouls.

The building contains the Théâtre du Capitole opera house and the painted Salle des Illustres, while the Donjon keep behind it dates to 1530. In the pavement lies a large Occitan cross with the signs of the zodiac, designed by Raymond Moretti and usually dated 1995; Moretti also painted the eastern arcade ceiling in 1997. The square, always open and free, hosts regular markets, including an organic market on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Did you know? The name is deliberate borrowing: a town clerk, Pierre Salmon, coined 'Capitole' in 1522 to echo Rome's Capitol, dressing up the local capitouls, the merchant magistrates who governed Toulouse, in classical robes.
