About Cathédrale Saint-Étienne

The Archdiocese's famously mismatched cathedral, where a wide Raymondine nave meets a taller, off-axis, unfinished Gothic choir, a composite of many styles never brought into line.

The Cathédrale Saint-Étienne is the seat of the Archdiocese of Toulouse and one of the strangest cathedrals in France, joining two incomplete churches of different periods into a single mismatched whole. The older Raymondine nave, begun around 1210 to 1220 in the wide southern Gothic style, is named for Raymond VI, Count of Toulouse, and carries a rose window of about 1230. From roughly 1272, Bishop Bertrand de l'Isle-Jourdain began a taller High Gothic choir on a different axis, intending to rebuild the entire cathedral.

That choir was never finished, reaching about 28 metres rather than the planned 40, so the two naves remain permanently misaligned. Popular accounts blame lost funds and the bishop's death; what is documented is simply that the rebuilding was left incomplete. With Romanesque origins around 1078 and later Flamboyant and Baroque additions, the cathedral is a composite of styles in local brick and stone, and it holds the tomb of Canal du Midi engineer Pierre-Paul Riquet.

Did you know? The cathedral is really two churches that never agreed: a wide early-Gothic nave at one angle, a taller unfinished choir at another, and where they meet the walls fail to line up.
