About Musée Saint-Raymond

Toulouse's archaeology museum, standing beside the Basilica of Saint-Sernin, best known for the Roman sculptures from the villa of Chiragan, including a long gallery of imperial portraits.

The Musée Saint-Raymond is the archaeology museum of Toulouse, standing beside the Basilica of Saint-Sernin. Its building, once a college for poor students on a site given to the abbey of Saint-Sernin in 1249, dates in its present form to 1523 and the work of the mason Louis Privat. It opened as a museum in 1892, inaugurated by mayor Camille Ournac, and became specifically the city's archaeology museum in 1949 under Robert Mesuret, reopening after major renovation on 8 May 1999.

The museum is best known for its Roman sculpture from the villa of Chiragan, excavated between 1826 and 1830, which includes a major series of imperial and mythological portraits and reliefs. Its collections also cover pre-Roman Gaulish and Celtic material and the antiquities of Roman Tolosa. Excavations beneath the building in 1994 to 1996 revealed an early Christian necropolis of the fourth century. It is a municipal museum operated by the City of Toulouse.

Did you know? The museum's Roman sculptures largely come from the villa of Chiragan, a grand estate excavated between 1826 and 1830; its haul of imperial and mythological portrait busts is the collection's centrepiece.
