About Garonne Riverbanks
The Garonne's quais frame the classic view of the Pink City, from the domed Hôpital de La Grave to the riverside basilica of the Daurade and a popular sunset.
The banks of the Garonne give Toulouse its most photographed profile. Travel guides call this the view of La Ville Rose, the Pink City, a nickname earned by its terracotta brick, and the west-facing quais are promoted as sunset spots. On the left bank rises the Hôpital de La Grave, whose landmark dome dominates the riverside skyline. The dome of its Saint-Joseph chapel is built of wood and clad in copper to keep it light, weighing over eight tonnes.
Downstream stands the basilica of Notre-Dame de la Daurade, whose name comes from the Latin deaurata, or gilded, after the golden mosaics of an earlier church on the site. The present neoclassical building replaced one demolished in 1761 and rose across the later 18th and 19th centuries. It venerates a Black Virgin whose current statue dates to 1807. The Pont Neuf crosses along this stretch, and the Prairie des Filtres offers riverside lawns nearby.
Did you know? The dome crowning La Grave's Saint-Joseph chapel is built of wood and clad in copper to stay light, yet it still weighs more than eight tonnes. The chapel was deconsecrated in 2015.
