About Hôtel d'Assézat

A grand sixteenth-century Renaissance mansion built on Toulouse's woad-dye fortunes, its courtyard stacking three classical orders; today it houses the Fondation Bemberg art collection, reopened in 2024.

The Hôtel d'Assézat is a sixteenth-century Renaissance mansion in central Toulouse, built for Pierre d'Assézat, a wealthy merchant who made his fortune in the woad (pastel) dye trade. It was constructed mainly between 1555 and 1562 to designs by Nicolas Bachelier, with work continued by his son Dominique after 1560. Its courtyard is famous for displaying the three superimposed classical orders, Doric, Ionic and Corinthian, over three storeys of brick and stone, with Mannerist decoration and one of the tallest staircase towers of any private house in the city.

The mansion has been a listed monument since 1914 and was restored by the city from 1980, gaining a modern extension. It houses the Académie des Jeux floraux, one of the oldest literary societies in Europe, and since the mid-1990s the Fondation Bemberg art collection, whose holdings range from Renaissance paintings and bronzes to a notable group of Bonnard works. The Bemberg reopened on 2 February 2024 after about three years of renovation and is open to visitors.

Did you know? The whole mansion was paid for by the colour blue: Pierre d'Assézat traded woad, the plant that gave a prized blue dye, and spent the proceeds on this Renaissance showpiece between 1555 and 1562.
