About Couvent des Jacobins

A vast Dominican church of Toulouse pink brick, famous for the palm-like 'palmier' vault fanning across its apse and for the relics of Saint Thomas Aquinas.

The Couvent des Jacobins is the great Dominican church of Toulouse, begun in 1230 and built in stages into the early fourteenth century in the pink brick of the southern Gothic. Its church has an unusual double-nave plan, two parallel naves that once separated the friars from the congregation, and an octagonal bell tower raised between about 1275 and 1315. The apse is crowned by the celebrated 'palmier,' a single central column from which 22 ribs fan out to carry the vault.

Since 1369 the church has held the relics of Saint Thomas Aquinas, though with interruptions: they were moved to Saint-Sernin during the Revolution and returned only in 1974. Napoleon's troops used the church as barracks from 1810, adding floors and destroying its glass and murals; the army left in 1861 and restoration ran through the twentieth century. Now deconsecrated, the complex is a City of Toulouse monument and cultural venue.

Did you know? The apse ceiling is the star: a single slender column erupts into 22 stone ribs that spread across the vault like palm fronds, which is why it has always been called the 'palmier.'
