About Basilique Saint-Sernin
A vast, still-working Romanesque pilgrimage basilica of warm Toulouse brick, raised over the relics of Saint Saturnin and often called the largest surviving Romanesque church anywhere in Europe.
Basilique Saint-Sernin is one of the great pilgrimage churches of the Romanesque age, built largely in the terracotta brick that colours Toulouse. It was raised to house the relics of Saint Saturnin, the first bishop of the city, martyred around 250, and grew through several campaigns from the late eleventh century, progressing east to west. Pope Urban II dedicated the altar in 1096, and in 1998 it joined the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the routes of Santiago de Compostela in France.
Its own promoters call it the largest surviving Romanesque church in Europe, while other sources rank it only among the largest, and its length is given as roughly 104 to 115 metres. Inside are the shrine of Saint Saturnin, a relic-filled crypt, and celebrated reliefs from the workshop of Bernard Gilduin. Restored by Viollet-le-Duc from 1860, it has since had many of those changes reversed, and it remains an active parish church and pilgrim stop.
Did you know? Pope Urban II consecrated the high altar in 1096, though the church around it was nowhere near finished; construction then carried on, east to west, well into the following century.
