About Musée des Augustins

The fine-arts museum of Toulouse, set in a former Augustinian convent and known for its Romanesque sculpture; closed since 2019, it is now reopening in phased stages.

The Musée des Augustins is the fine-arts museum of Toulouse, housed in a former Augustinian convent whose buildings were begun in 1310. It first opened to the public on 27 August 1795, one of the oldest museums in France, established shortly after the Louvre. Its collection of over 4,000 works spans the Middle Ages to the early twentieth century and is especially noted for twelfth-century Romanesque sculpture gathered from Toulouse's demolished religious buildings, alongside Gothic and Renaissance carving, European paintings, and sculptures by Rodin and Camille Claudel.

The complex includes a Gothic church and a large cloister with a reconstructed medieval garden. The museum closed in 2019 for a major renovation and has been reopening in stages since December 2025. As of September 2026 it is only partially open: the Gothic sculpture rooms are due to reopen on 3 October 2026, while restoration of the cloister continues into 2027 and the convent church into autumn 2027. Visitors should check which sections are accessible before travelling.

Did you know? Opened to the public on 27 August 1795, the Augustins ranks among France's oldest museums, born just after the Louvre; some histories push the date to 1793, depending on which revolutionary moment you count.
