About Canal du Midi

Pierre-Paul Riquet's 17th-century canal reaches the Mediterranean and won UNESCO status in 1996. Its famous plane-tree canopy is slowly being felled and replanted as a canker disease spreads.

The Canal du Midi runs roughly 240 kilometres from the Garonne at Toulouse to the Étang de Thau on the Mediterranean. It was engineered and originally owned by Pierre-Paul Riquet, built between 1667 and 1681 and opened in May 1681. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 1996, and French law classes it as a Grand Site de France. Within Toulouse it begins at the Ponts-Jumeaux basin, where it meets the Garonne and the Canal de Brienne, then threads through the city past Port Saint-Sauveur.

For generations the canal has been lined with plane trees whose branches form a shaded green vault over the water. Since a canker stain called chancre coloré, caused by the fungus Ceratocystis platani, was detected here in 2006, infected trees have been felled and the banks replanted. Voies Navigables de France has run the replanting programme since 2011. The tree count keeps changing as felling and replanting continue.
