About Jardin des Plantes

A green pause in central Toulouse, this former botanical garden became a public park in 1887. Expect an 1877 cascade, a Wallace fountain, sculptures and the neighbouring natural history museum.

The Jardin des Plantes is a public park and former botanical garden covering about seven hectares in central Toulouse. Its roots reach back to a botanical garden set up in the 1730s, which moved to this site near the porte Matabiau in 1756. In 1887, around an international exposition, it was reworked into a public park, keeping the old name but not its scientific standing. Its early history is linked to the botanist Philippe Picot de Lapeyrouse.

Today it works as a leafy retreat and a green link between the Grand-Rond and the Jardin Royal. An ornamental cascade dates from 1877, a Wallace fountain of 1883 stands among the paths, and sculptures include work by Alexandre Falguière. Historic gates rescued from the former Capitole frame the grounds, while conifers, deciduous trees and tropical species fill the beds. It adjoins the city's natural history museum, and a menagerie operated here until 1976.

Did you know? The garden keeps the name Jardin des Plantes from its botanical past, but it became a public park in 1887. The original garden dated to the 1730s and moved to this site in 1756.
