About Museo del Greco
The 'House of El Greco,' where the painter never actually lived, a recreated Golden-Age home that launched Spain's house-museums, holding his dreamlike View and Plan of Toledo and his Apostles.
The Museo del Greco, in Toledo's old Jewish quarter, is the only museum in Spain dedicated to the painter El Greco. Despite being known as the "House of El Greco," the painter never lived in this building: it was created in the early 20th century by Benigno de la Vega-Inclán, Marquis of Vega-Inclán, who bought and rebuilt a group of ruined houses near where El Greco had actually lived into an evocation of a 16th-century Toledan home, with a courtyard and garden. The project helped launch the Spanish house-museum tradition. Its collection includes El Greco's View and Plan of Toledo (about 1608), a panoramic vision of the city, and a near-complete Apostolado, the series of Christ and the twelve Apostles (about 1610-1614), as well as The Tears of Saint Peter. It opened to the public around 1910 and lies within the UNESCO-listed historic city of Toledo.
