About Toledo Cathedral
Spain's primatial cathedral, 267 years in the building (1226 to 1493) over the city's former great mosque, soaring French Gothic pierced by a Baroque hole in the roof that pours daylight onto the altar.
Toledo Cathedral (Catedral Primada Santa María de Toledo) is the primatial cathedral of Spain and one of the greatest achievements of Spanish Gothic architecture. Begun in 1226 under King Ferdinand III, on the site of the city's former main mosque and an earlier Visigothic basilica, it was completed and consecrated in 1493. Built in French-inspired High Gothic on a five-nave plan roughly 120 metres long, it absorbed later styles over the centuries, most spectacularly the Baroque Transparente (1729-1732) by Narciso Tomé, who cut an opening through the vault so that daylight falls onto the tabernacle behind the high altar. The sacristy serves as a picture gallery, holding El Greco's Disrobing of Christ (El Espolio, 1577-1579), painted for the room, beneath a ceiling by Luca Giordano, alongside other masterworks. The Archbishop of Toledo has held the title Primate of Spain since 1088. The cathedral is part of the UNESCO-listed historic city of Toledo.
