About Plaza de Zocodover
Toledo's living room for a thousand years, a square whose Arabic name means 'market of the beasts,' rebuilt after a 1589 fire, and still the heart of the city's marzipan trade.
The Plaza de Zocodover is the main square and traditional hub of Toledo, near the top of the old town. Its name comes from the Arabic sūq ad-dawābb, "market of the beasts of burden," recalling the livestock market held here under Muslim rule; it has been the city's central gathering place for most of its history. The present arcaded square dates from after a fire destroyed the old one in 1589; it was rebuilt in the sober Herreran style associated with Juan de Herrera under Philip II. One corner opens through the medieval Arco de la Sangre. The square is also the centre of Toledo's marzipan (mazapán) trade, a sweet of Andalusi origin long made by the city's convents and now protected by a Geographical Indication granted in 2002. Today it is lined with cafés and shops and remains the heart of city life.
Did you know? Genuine Toledo marzipan is protected like a wine: since 2002 the name mazapán de Toledo has carried a Geographical Indication, and the real thing must be at least half ground almond.
