About Museo de Santa Cruz

A dazzling Plateresque former hospital for foundlings, one of Spain's first Renaissance buildings, now a museum whose great treasure is a room of El Greco, including his 1613 Immaculate Conception.

The Museo de Santa Cruz occupies a former hospital founded at the very end of the 15th century by Cardinal Pedro González de Mendoza to shelter the orphaned and abandoned children of Toledo. Built in the early 1500s, chiefly by the architects Enrique and Antón Egas with a celebrated Plateresque portal by Alonso de Covarrubias, it is one of the first Renaissance buildings in Spain, laid out on a Greek-cross plan. Since 1961 it has been a museum of fine arts and archaeology. Its greatest treasure is a room of paintings by El Greco, including his luminous Immaculate Conception of 1613, among the finest of his late works; the collection also holds tapestries and banners, one linked to the Battle of Lepanto, along with sculpture, ceramics and Roman remains. The building stands just off the Plaza de Zocodover, within the UNESCO-listed historic city of Toledo.

Did you know? Cardinal Mendoza, so powerful over Ferdinand and Isabella that he was nicknamed 'the third king,' left money in his will to build this as a hospital for Toledo's orphaned and abandoned children.
