About Puente de Alcántara
An ancient bridge over the Tagus below the Alcázar, whose Arabic name means simply 'the bridge', Roman, Moorish, medieval and Baroque work in one span, and for centuries Toledo's guarded eastern gate.
The Puente de Alcántara is an ancient bridge over the river Tagus on the eastern side of Toledo, below the Alcázar. A crossing of Roman origin, its name comes from the Arabic al-qantara, meaning simply "the bridge." A major reconstruction was completed in 997 under the city's Muslim governor, and for centuries the bridge served as the fortified eastern gateway into Toledo, with towers and gates at each end where tolls were collected. Its western tower dates from the reign of Alfonso X in the 13th century and was later heightened under the Catholic Monarchs, whose arms it bears; the eastern end was rebuilt as a Baroque triumphal arch in 1721. The bridge thus combines Roman, Islamic, medieval and Baroque work in a single crossing. Declared a national monument in 1921, it lies within the UNESCO-listed historic city of Toledo, spanning the deep gorge that nearly encircles the city.
Did you know? The name Puente de Alcántara means, literally, 'Bridge Bridge': puente is Spanish for bridge, and alcántara is Arabic for the bridge, the same word twice, in two languages.
